Admission to BIU is based on a number of factors. the Committee on Admission looks at an applicant’s background for special aptitudes, academic record; the applicant’s potential to meet the rigorous academic requirements of a highly structured curriculum, not one which is the sole determinant in deciding eligibility. Preference will be given to applicants who:

1. are generally expected to have earned a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an American, Canadian, or an other internationally accredited colleges or universities;

2.have completed a minimum three years in an accredited college or university (90 semester hours of credit);

3. have the higher cumulative grade point average (GPA The following college-level courses, with a grade 2.0 or better on a four-point scale, must normally be included in the premedical studies:

The following courses summarized above are the minimum academic requirements necessary for consideration by the Committee on Admissions. It is also strongly recommended that students take additional courses in social sciences, liberal arts, literature and the humanities.
The BIU accepts applicants who are not premedical majors, i.e, applicants from many other fields study are given equal consideration as science-oriented students, if they are well prepared academically to pursue the curriculum.
Candidates who have completed their undergraduate studies at any accredited college or university in countries having an educational system different from that the United States will be evaluated on their merits but will be expected to have completed a pre-medical curriculum comparable to that described above. All required documents:
- should be submitted in the language the country, and should be accompanied by a notarized English translation;
- should also be evaluated by an approved international credential evaluation service.
Test English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
English Language Requirements: Burnett International University courses are taught in the English language. Therefore, it is important that Candidates will be prepared academically to continue the curriculum and also to have ability and skill to communicate well. So, applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Or Candidates who have not taken a sufficient amount their academic coursework in English from an English language college or university must take the (TOEFL), and must provide the official record of the scores for the Test English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).The minimum acceptable score is 550 on the paper-based test or 213 on the computer-based test. The University will provide English language training for students who have insufficient English languages skills. Students may need to attend additional semesters at BIU.
Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
The Burnett International University School Medicine and Health Sciences does not require the MCAT scores for admission, but the accepted applicants are advised to take it, and have the result the test forwarded to the Committee on Admissions before they will be allowed to register for classes.

ADMISSION PROCESS
A complete application consists the following documents, which should be sent to the attention the Admissions fice at Burnett International University School Medicine and Health Sciences. It is not necessary to submit all the materials at the same time:
- A completed application form,
No application will be considered by the Committee on Admission unless all questions are answered fully.
- A non-refundable application fee $ 50.00 U.S.
- Two official letters of recommendation.
One recommendation should be from a premedical professor acquainted with the applicant's academic ability; committee recommendations from colleges and universities are acceptable. The other should be from a physician who is familiar with the applicant's experience in a health care setting, if available. No more than 3 letters total should be sent. All letters must be sent directly from the recommender to Burnett International University School Medicine and Health Sciences.
- Official transcript's grades: Official transcript's grades from each college and/or professional school attended for the required minimum 90 credits, including all premedical courses. Final transcripts from each Institution attended must be mailed directly to the Committee on Admission Burnett International University School Medicine and Health Sciences. Please be advised that the presentation incomplete or invalid credentials on an application could result in that application being rejected. If discovered after the student has matriculated, such student will be subject to dismissal.
- A personal interview: It is part the admission process; however, being interviewed is not a guarantee admission. The personal interview allows the committee to asses the applicant's maturity, adaptability, ability to handle stress, aptitude, background and, in particular, motivation for the pursuit medicine.
Applicants who have not been contacted for an interview should consider that their applications have not been successful.
Within two to three weeks after initial application materials have been received, the Registrar will schedule a telephone interview conference call or personal interview between the Admissions committee and the applicants whose credentials are judged to be indicative the potential for successful completion the prescribed medical school curriculum. Generally, persons whose applications are incomplete, or whose qualifications are not acceptable, will be so notified. Following the interview, the Admissions Committee's decision is communicated by letter to the applicant as soon as possible.
Acceptance fee:
After receiving a letter acceptance from Burnett International University School Medicine and Health Sciences, Applicants will be required to secure their candidacy within two weeks by submitting a deposit $ 500.00. This deposit will be deducted from the tuition when the applicant matriculates, but will be forfeited if the applicant withdraws one week after. The remainder the tuition and fees are due 30 days prior the beginning the semester in which admission has been granted.
Accepted Students. The Admissions Office will advise all deposited applicants on aspects their preparation for living and studying in the Republic Haiti.
Additional documents: Prior to arriving on campus, all accepted students must submit:
- an Original health certificate from a licensed physician, including a current list immunizations as well as a current tuberculin (TB) test. The certificate must be sent to the Admissions Office.
- Valid passport (Copy to be sent to BIU in Florida.)
- Ten color 2x2 passport-size photographs, signed on the back.
- Letter good conduct from the student's local police department.
- Pro roundtrip airplane ticket.
N.B. Students should submit these items to the Admissions Office in Florida, 8 weeks prior to departing for Haiti.
Upon acceptance, Burnett International University School Medicine and Health Sciences will assist students in completing the visa application process. In the majority cases, the actual visa will be received once the student arrives in Haiti.
Advanced Standing Transfer Applicants:
Students enrolled in other medical schools may seek to transfer to our University. Such students must arrange with the medical school they are attending for an official transcript their academic record to be sent to BIU. It is also the applicants’ responsibility to furnish official course descriptions and course-by-course evaluations the courses they have completed. (If necessary, these must be attested to by an approved international credentials evaluation agency.) World Education Services, Inc., (212) 966-6311, must evaluate transcripts that are not in English.
Anyone applying for transfer to BIU school Medicine must:
- Make a formal application to BIU school Medicine Admission Office;
- Fulfill the same admission requirements to Burnett International University School Medicine and Health Sciences, which include submitting official transcripts all college or university previously attended, MCAT scores, USMLE, if taken, and letters evaluation;
- Have taken or arrange to take a special competitive examination;
- Be in good standing at the transferring institution. Supply a Written statement outlining reasons for requesting for transfer.
The admission Committee, will determine level of placement in the curriculum of accepted transfer students.
Generally, transfer credit cannot be extended beyond two years for applicants who have not been attending medical school for more than three years. No accepted transfer applicant will be placed beyond the fourth semester of the curriculum. Therefore, all students accepted for transfer, regardless their previous training, must enroll for at least one semester on the Basic Science campus in Haiti prior to matriculating in the Clinical Science Segment.
Transfer credit cannot be given for incomplete or failed courses, or for courses taken more than four years prior to the time the applicant is accepted for enrollment at BIU. |
